AGROforestry and MIXed farming systems - Participatory research to drive the transition to a resilient and efficient land use in Europe

AGROMIX (Horizon 2020) aims to carry out participatory research to drive the transition towards resilient and efficient land use in Europe. It focuses on practical agro-ecological solutions for farm and land management and related value chains. In its final stages, AGROMIX involves two partners of the ReForest project, OSA and ORC. The project analyses the sustainability and resilience of different production systems and different approaches to value chains of agroforestry products. Once the project is completed and the results are published, they will be useful for WP3 and WP6 of ReForest.

This ongoing collaboration facilitates knowledge exchange, identification of common stakeholders and joint policy making at the national level, thereby enhancing the mutual progress of both projects.

Multi-actor and transdisciplinary development of efficient and resilient MIXED farming and agroforestry-systems

MIXED (Horizon 2020) uses a participatory and transdisciplinary approach to promote and apply efficient and resilient Mixed Farming and Agroforestry Systems (MiFAS). Specifically, this approach involves organic and conventional networks of farmers, researchers and other stakeholders to ensure the highest level of implementation of MiFAS in relation to climate change and ecosystem services. MIXED involves two partners from Poland, IUNG-PIB and JUCHOWO FARM, working closely with OSA. This cross-project cooperation facilitates the exchange of information on initiatives, conferences and workshops in Poland, and will allow for the organisation of joint events in the near future.

Innovative resilient farming systems in Mediterranean environments

The aim of the Transition project is to pave the way for a transition to resilient agriculture in the Mediterranean basin, maximising the net positive impact on the environment while increasing the resilience of agro-ecosystems and rural societies. EMEA and UBO are contributing to the joint policy study on agroforestry initiated by the Transition project since May 2023, which has enabled them to establish scientific collaborations with several universities and research institutes and to gain a better understanding of the finance and policy applicable to the European agroforestry sector. These collaborations and knowledge exchange are particularly important for the deliverables of WP5.

Agroforestry systems for climate change adaptation of Mediterranean agricultural and forest areas

The main objective of the LIFE AgroForAdapt project is to promote agroforestry systems for climate change adaptation of the agrarian and forestry sectors in the Mediterranean. The aim is to implement agroforestry systems in areas where they are still generally unknown, such as in Catalonia and Castile-Leon, Spain. EMEA has regular contact and knowledge exchange with the LIFE AgroForAdapt project project coordinator, Dr. Jaime Coello (the Forest Science and Technology Centre of Catalonia), who is member of EMEA’s working group on agroforestry sector finance and policy.

Agroforestry’s Biophysical potentials for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and Decision making across scales

ABCDR (BMBF/DLR) evaluates the potential of agroforestry systems for carbon dioxide removal and assesses the economic viability, productivity and trade-offs related to the up-scaling of agroforestry in Germany. Since September 2022, UBO has been working closely with ABCDR to assess the carbon sequestration potential of agroforestry systems and explore their integration into the carbon market as a viable business model. This collaboration includes regular exchanges and joint efforts to develop conceptual models of agroforestry to capture the costs, benefits and risks associated with its adoption.

Agroecological strategies for sustainable weed management in key European crops

AGROSUS (Horizon Europe) aims to identify appropriate tools and agro-ecological strategies to prevent and manage the occurrence of weeds in relevant crops in conventional, organic and mixed farming systems in the eleven biogeographical regions of the EU and associated countries. In addition to conventional systems, agroforestry systems are also included in the project’s test areas. Stakeholders involved in the ReForest project will be informed about the results of AGROSUS, and mutual cooperation can improve the dissemination of results between the two projects.

Unlocking data-driven innovation for improving productivity and data sharing in mushroom value chain

MUSHNOMICS (Horizon 2020) aims to unlocking data-driven innovation for improving productivity and data sharing in mushroom value chain. The project takes a full chain systems approach, involving stakeholders from producer to consumer and beyond, with a balanced research-practice partnership involving academia and industry from Denmark, Hungary, Ireland and Romania. MUSHNOMICS explores the potential use of wood chips from agroforestry as a substrate for mushroom production, which may providie an opportunity to increase income streams from agroforestry systems. Although there is currently no formal collaboration between MUSHNOMICS and ReForest, there are synergies in the use of wood chips from agroforestry for mushroom production.

Circular BioEconomy Market Uptake and Policy Support in Central Europe

The BIOECO-UP project is advancing the circular bioeconomy across Central Europe by replacing fossil resources with renewable raw materials, designing innovative value chains, and driving policy transformation. A key opportunity provided by BIOECO-UP is the utilization of surplus wood and tree waste from pruning and other agroforestry activities, converting this biomass into biochar to enhance soil quality or sell as charcoal. The project is developing and testing a value chain model for biochar production, which can be used to assess agroforestry value chains in the ReForest initiative. Initial tests using the flame curtain method in Poland, conducted by ReForest Partner OSA, have shown promising results, demonstrating the potential for local biochar production to contribute to both environmental sustainability and economic viability on a smaller scale.

FARCLIMATE: MOVING FORWARD TO ACHIEVING CLIMATE-RESILIENT AND SUSTAINABLE EUROPEAN REGIONAL ECONOMIC SYSTEMS

The FARCLIMATE project aims to implement transformative solutions on the path to climate resilience in at least 20 regions and communities across Europe. It will address the complex challenges of developing and expanding climate-resilient measures, making them available and understandable to everyone, while also paying special attention to the social, political and economic barriers commonly found.
