FarmTree Advantage i aktion: Styrkelse af agroforestry-værdikæder og levebrød

On October 23, 2025, the ReForest project hosted its third thematic webinar, “FarmTree Advantage: Practical Use of the Platform to Strengthen Value Chains and Livelihoods”.

The event showcased how data-driven tools like the FarmTree platform can bring agroforestry innovation closer to the field and to the people working in it.

This session focused on bridging the gap between research and practice, highlighting how digital solutions can support agroforestry farmers in making more informed decisions, improving economic viability, and contributing to Klimaets modstandsdygtighed.

The webinar opened with a welcome by Galina Ivanova, ReForest Communication Manager, followed by a concise overview of the project’s scope and achievements by Will Simonson from the Økologisk forskningscenter (UK).

A key highlight of the session was the Hungarian Living Lab and its central case study: Valahatanya, an organic permaculture farm practicing diverse forms of agroforestry. Andrea Vityi, from the University of Sopron, shared insights into the farm’s challenges—ranging from small-scale yields to wind-related risks—and the collaborative efforts with researchers to quantify ecosystem services and optimize production.

The core of the webinar was a live demonstration of the FarmTree platform by Roos van Haeff, co-developer of the tool. FarmTree is a digital solution designed to model agroforestry systems, evaluating key metrics like:

  • Yield projections over time
  • Potentiale for kulstofbinding
  • Soil health and water flow
  • Financial viability and environmental returns

With user-friendly dashboards and scenario simulations, the platform empowers farmers, investors, and supply chain actors to plan, monitor, and validate restoration and production efforts at the plot or landscape level.

The demo featured the real-world setup of Valaha Тtanya Farm, demonstrating how shelterbelts, fruit tree alleys, and diversified cropping systems can be translated into measurable outputs using FarmTree.

The webinar concluded with a clear message: innovation in agroforestry must be practical, accessible, and farmer-centered. By combining on-the-ground knowledge from Living Labs with cutting-edge digital tools like FarmTree, the ReForest project is helping pave the way for a more resilient and regenerative farming future across Europe.

For those who missed the session, the recording is available on the ReForest YouTube channel, offering a valuable resource for farmers, advisors, policymakers, and researchers alike.
