On April 15, 2025, the ReForest Project joined forces once again with Path2Dea y D4AgEcol projects to host the second webinar organised under the Agroecology Cluster. The event, titled “Digital Tools in Agriculture: Perceptions and Barriers to Adoption,” brought together nearly 80 participants from across Europe and beyond and was moderated by the ReForest project coordinator Martin Lukac.
Unlike a typical webinar, this session was designed to be interactive, encouraging farmers, researchers, advisors, and policymakers to engage directly through live questions and reflections. The result was a dynamic exchange of ideas on how to make digitalisation work for sustainable farming systems—particularly in agroecology and agroforestry.
The Adoption Gap
Opened by Evangelia Mourmoura (DG AGRI) with a look at the EU’s long-term vision for agriculture, the webinar highlighted that while digital innovation holds strong potential, its adoption remains uneven. Barriers such as high costs, lack of adaptation to diverse farm realities, and limited digital infrastructure continue to hinder uptake especially in small-scale and agroecological contexts.
Solutions are already available
But the speakers also pointed to solutions already being tested on the ground in all three projects organising the event.
Tom Staton (ReForest) presented how the FarmTree Tool y el Public Goods Tool are being used within ReForest’s Living Lab network to support agroforestry planning, sustainability assessment, and decision-making. He underlined the importance of an iterative co-creation process, where tools are tested and refined with the strong involvement of farmers.
Elias Maritan (D4AgEcol) provided insights into a multi-criteria analysis of various digital tools, sharing results from real-world case studies. His presentation showed that the impacts of digital tools vary greatly depending on farm type, and must be evaluated across economic, environmental, and social dimensions.
Evelyn Reinmuth (Path2Dea) shared findings from co-creation workshops involving farmers, advisors, and producer organisations. Her key message was that when tools are simple, robust, and embedded in a support network, farmers are far more likely to adopt them.
The webinar served as a strong example of collaboration across policy, research, and practice. It showcased the value of farmer-led innovation, and how shared learning between EU-funded projects can drive practical outcomes for the future of agriculture.
