As the pressure mounts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from land use across Europe, agroforestry is increasingly recognised as a powerful nature-based solution — one that balances climate, biodiversity, and economic resilience. But to scale its impact, we need more than trees, namely viable business models.
At the 10th Forum Agroforstsysteme (Gießen, September 2025), Dr. Rico Hübner (DeFAF) spotlighted how agroforestry can become a cornerstone of climate farming, provided that the right regulatory and financial structures are in place.
En Proyecto ReForest promotes co-creation in Living Labs across Europe, involving farmers, advisors, scientists, and policymakers. A recurring insight from our engagement is that economic feasibility is essential to agroforestry adoption. Dr. Hübner echoed this at the Forum representing ReForest: agroforestry must not only sequester carbon but do so in a way that is verifiable, incentivized, and integrated into broader land management planning.
Reforest has a unique enabling role by bridging science, practice, and policy:
- We are testing agroforestry systems across eight Living Labs, collecting productivity and biodiversity data that can inform MRV frameworks.
- Our herramientas help visualise agroforestry’s impact, which is an important step toward transparency and better communication with advisors and policymakers.
- ReForest is engaging with EU-level dialogues and feeding insights from real farms into certification and support scheme design.
