Main objectives: what to expect from the project?

ReForest (Grant agreement No. 101060635) is a Horizon Europe Project submitted to the Land, Ocean and Water call for climate action, specific topic: HORIZON-CL6-2021-CLIMATE-01-08: Agroforestry to meet climate, biodiversity, and agricultural sustainability goals.

The project will focus on the advantages of this land type management providing novel solutions to enhance agroforestry and the sustainability of food production. ReForest will empower farmers in Europe and associated countries to deliver multiple objectives: food production, carbon capture, and biodiversity.

What does it mean in practice?

ReForest is going to analyse and overcome the barriers preventing agroforestry from being the leading land management type in Europe.
The project is built on encouraging science-practice partnerships and open science approach representing the real-world ecological, economic and social potential of agroforestry. Using latest digital developments, ReForest is going to provide working solutions to promote the adoption of AF across Europe:

Precise tools for accurate measurement of AF systems performance
Assessment of socioeconomic value chains
Working business models to support farmers in switching to/practicing AF
A fully validated interactive tool for farmers to quantify the biodiversity and carbon capture value of their AF sites
A set of Policy recommendation Papers

ReForest is built on a strong consortium of 14 entities from 10 European countries having complementary expertise.

Word from the coordinator:

The ReForest project got off to a positive start this summer, both officially and in terms of partner engagement. We have a common goal to increase the interest in and the uptake of agroforestry in Europe and its neighbourhood, driven by our conviction that this land use offers many benefits additional to food production. Clearly, agroforestry could be the answer to many environmental and economic challenges threatening modern agriculture, our task is to understand why it is not more prevalent and how to incentivise stakeholders to make the switch. We have a good plan, now its up to us to enact the change.

ReForest Kick-off meeting in Prague:

The Kick-off meeting of the ReForest project was organized on 12-13 September in Prague, Czech Republic and hosted by the project coordinator Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CZU). It was a great occasion for all participants to discuss their future work and expectations from the project implementation. The first meeting was dedicated to presenting in detail the project goals, the planned activities, and the roles of the partners.

Workshops and discussions were organized for each of the work packages to allow in-depth discussions on the project objectives and the ways to achieve its goals. The richness of these exchanges promises smooth and intensive collaboration in the years to come.

The living labs:

Utilising the co-creation power of citizen science approach

A network of 7 “living labs” will be developed based on citizen science approaches as a testing facility to co-create and troubleshoot tools, instruments, and information output developed during the project. Living labs aim to maximise the use of existing knowledge and data built upon foundations laid by previous projects and establish a stakeholder and actor engagement platform to enable knowledge transfer, training and innovation.

The living labs are tools for identifying best practices, data collection, testing and validation of the tools and solutions to be developed during the project.

The labs will be established in the Czech Republic, Belgium, Spain, Hungary, Germany, Denmark, United Kingdom and Bulgaria.

ReForest online:

The active engagement of all stakeholders is of particular importance for the success of the ReForest project. That’s why the project is benefiting from a large online visibility. The project website was launched at the end of September and is providing information on the main objectives, planned course of action, as well as all publicly accessible results of the project.

The ReForest social media accounts are active since the very beginning of the project.
