SUMMARY:Driving Sustainable Agriculture: ReForest at the European Carbon Farming Summit 2025
DESCRIPTION:The ReForest Project is excited to announce its participation in the upcoming 2nd European Carbon Farming Summit\, scheduled for March 4–6\, 2025\, at Dublin Castle in Dublin\, Ireland. \nThis summit serves as a pivotal platform for advancing carbon farming practices across Europe\, aligning seamlessly with ReForest’s mission to promote sustainable land management and agroforestry solutions. \nThe summit will focus on three main sessions: \n\nWhich practices for European soils?\n\nThis part of the conference will be dedicated to exploring regional agrosystems\, focusing on farmer acceptance\, the co-benefits and trade-offs of practices\, and the development of value chains. \n\nWhat standards and certification mechanisms?\n\nThe session will delve into quality criteria\, baselining methodologies\, overlapping schemes\, additionality\, and the implications of offsetting and claims. \n\nHow to monitor carbon fluxes?\n\nIn this session the main focus will be on data harmonisation\, model calibration\, emerging technologies\, remote sensing techniques\, and monitoring initiatives. \nThese topics are integral to the ReForest Project’s objectives\, particularly in enhancing carbon sequestration through agroforestry and developing robust monitoring and verification systems. \nReForest’s Contributions at the Summit: \n\nPosters by the University of Copenhagen (UCPH):\n\nComparative Carbon Stock Quantification in Diverse Agricultural Systems: Paving the Way for Sustainable Agriculture\nHarnessing Soil Organic Carbon: Unlocking Benefits for Crop Productivity and Climate Resilience with Agroforestry Systems\n\n\nWorkshop Participation:\n\nMonitoring\, Reporting\, and Verification (MRV) of Agroforestry Carbon Farming Schemes: Rico Hübner from the German Association for Agroforestry (DeFAF) will represent ReForest in this workshop. The session will focus on MRV of agroforestry carbon farming schemes\, including environmental and social issues. It will build on the EURAF typology for agroforestry practices (see EURAF Policy Briefing #1)—identifying eight types of agroforestry—and will focus on agricultural land rather than forest grazing.\n\n\n\nThese contributions underscore ReForest’s commitment to fostering sustainable agricultural practices and enhancing carbon sequestration through agroforestry. \nWe look forward to engaging with stakeholders and contributing to meaningful discussions at the summit.

SUMMARY:Designing your agroforestry system with the FarmTree Tool. A case study from the UK Living Lab
DESCRIPTION:online \nAgroforestry holds immense benefits for farms\, the environment\, and society at large. Yet\, its widespread adoption faces significant challenges\, including the uncertainty surrounding expected environmental and profitability outcomes. \nDrawing insights from data collected from ReForest Living Labs across Europe\, the FarmTree Tool emerges as a digital solution to this challenge. This software-based model\, accessible through an easy-to-use online interface\, and connected to a scientific species database\, empowers land users to craft virtual agroforestry systems and anticipate their performance across production\, financial\, and agro-ecological dimensions. The tool allows to flexibly design unique agroforestry systems in an online environment (in terms of species composition\, arrangement\, and management)\, and offers a comprehensive overview of the farming system performance. \nThe FarmTree Tool integrates site-specific data such as: \n\nfarmer information\,\nplot design and management\,\nclimate conditions\,\nsoil composition\,\nand species unique characteristics.\n\nBy synthesizing these inputs\, the tool generates modelling projections for the envisioned agroforestry scenario over a defined period of time. \nThe Cockle Park Farm\, part of the UK Living Lab\, is one of the farms within ReForest that has been analysed with the FarmTree Tool. The upcoming event presents the application of the FarmTree Tool for this Living Lab. It shows how the FarmTree Tool can be a valuable instrument for farmers\, advisors\, researchers\, policymakers\, and all stakeholders working in agroforestry within the ReForest and European context.. \nKey webinar topics and themes include: \n\nOverview of the ReForest project: Living Labs data generation for Farmer and Policy Support (Prof Ing Martin Lukac PhD\, ReForest project coordinator)\nA UK Living Lab case study: Cockle Park Farm – its objectives\, design and challenges (Janie Caldbeck/Will Simonson\, Organic Research Centre; James Standen\, Cockle Park farm manager)\nFarmTree Tool a digital solution for designing\, comparing\, and reporting impact of agroforestry systems (Steffie Rijpkema\, FarmTree)\nThe FarmTree Tool in the Living Lab UK case: how can the FarmTree Tool be used to estimate vegetation cover\, biomass production\, yields and carbon (Steffie Rijpkema\, FarmTree)\nInteractive session and Questions\n\nAs a webinar participant\, you will get temporary access to temperate agroforestry species with your FarmTree Tool registration for free\, to explore the potential of the tool for your context! \nTo ensure your participation\, register now and secure your spot by completing the simple registration form. Following your registration\, further details pertaining to event access will be shared. \nWe are looking forward to your participation!
