Key themes included root-driven sustainability, soil protection and health, plant production in changing environments, root-soil-ecosystem interactions, and technological innovation in root research.

At the event, Inagro presented the Belgian Living Lab, a long-term temperate silvoarable agroforestry research site in Flanders, Belgium. The site offers a unique opportunity to study woody root processes under real farming conditions, with a focus on linking belowground tree–crop interactions to aboveground performance, including crop and tree growth, soil health, water management, biodiversity and climate resilience.

The poster highlighted one of the key knowledge gaps in agroforestry: the root zone. While much attention is often given to what happens aboveground, the belowground interactions between tree roots, crops, soil, water, nutrients, carbon and microorganisms are crucial for understanding how agroforestry systems function over time.

The Belgian research site at Inagro includes a 1.4 ha silvoarable alley cropping system with walnut trees, arable crops and vegetables. Long-term monitoring at the site combines manual field measurements with in situ sensing techniques, helping researchers better understand spatial gradients and interactions between trees, crops and soil.

The poster sparked valuable discussions and opened up new opportunities for collaboration with experts interested in woody root architecture, root distribution, rhizosphere processes, monitoring techniques and modelling in real farming conditions.

ReForest was also represented in the conference programme by project coordinator Martin Lukáč, who was part of the organising committee for Woody Roots IX.

By putting the Belgian Living Lab in the spotlight, we contributed to an important scientific conversation: how can a deeper understanding of roots help us design more resilient, productive and future-proof agroforestry systems?

The answer may lie beneath our feet.

Descargar cartel

Willem Van Colen and Dieter Depraetere from Inagro represented the ReForest project at the 9th International Symposium on Physiological Processes in Roots of Woody Plants, held in Como, Italy.
