In many rural regions, long and narrow fields, balks, hedgerows, access roads, gullies, orchards, woodland patches and small forest areas still reflect centuries of land use.

In south-eastern Poland, this mosaic landscape is closely linked to cultural identity, regional production and tourism. Although fragmented land use may seem less efficient, it plays an important role in reducing erosion, protecting soils, supporting biodiversity and preserving the traditional rural character of the countryside.

Another important example is the Chłapowski landscape, where shelterbelts, hedgerows, tree alleys and in-field woodlands were introduced in the 19th century as a model of sustainable agricultural management. Today, these elements remain part of Poland’s cultural heritage and provide inspiration for modern agroforestry systems adapted to climate and socio-economic challenges.

<p
